North Dakota Jobs
Gallup’s Job Creation Index ranked North Dakota as the nation’s top job market for the first half of 2011, and has ranked in the top 10 job markets in the US since January 2008.
The oil and natural gas industry currently generates (directly and indirectly) over 60,000 jobs for North Dakotans. These are highly skilled, well-paying jobs. In 2010, the average wage in the oil and gas extraction industry was $90,225 -- 141.5% higher than the statewide average wage of $37,353 (Source: North Dakota Petroleum Council, NPDC).
It should be noted that the oil and gas industry supports jobs not just in exploring, producing, refining, transporting and marketing oil and natural gas, but also through the purchases it makes of other goods and services that support the industry’s operations. Equipment suppliers, construction companies, management specialists, and food service businesses are all a strong link in the industry. These businesses, in turn, purchase other goods and services that support other jobs throughout North Dakota and the nation.
